A cross-lab team of volunteers took the Federal Electronics Challenge to improve SLAC's "green quotient" by implementing a program for more eco-friendly electronics purchases and disposal. The effort made SLAC one of 11 Department of Energy facilities to receive a 2010 FEC award.

    SLAC to Join University-wide Evacuation Drill October 7
Together with all of Stanford University, SLAC will run a lab-wide evacuation drill on October 7. During work hours that day, staff will be alerted to a mock "earthquake" and asked to briefly shelter in place, then gather at their building's emergency assembly point.

Early last Tuesday and Wednesday, seven dumpsters containing approximately 5000 concrete blocks—more than 200,000 pounds alltogether—were hauled away from the area known as the "Bone Yard," located on the north side of the Klystron Gallery between Sectors 12 and 14.

In a continued effort to clear out and recycle unused materials, especially any that might pose a risk, SLAC's Facilities and Environmental Safety & Health Divisions worked together to successfully drain a tank of old diesel fuel on August 17.

    SAFE2010: SLACers Join Forces to Reduce Risks and Re-use Materials
Several departments, including Waste Management, Facilities and Environmental Safety and Health, worked together to remove two modules containing tubes of ethane gas from a site near Interaction Region 6, where they had sat untouched for several years. In addition to creating a safer environment for SLAC employees, the groups found a way to reuse the material that resulted in a cost savings for the lab.

    Medical Services to Transition to Stanford University Management
Soon, Stanford University's Occupational Health Center will provide SLAC medical services, including evaluation and treatment for work-related injuries and illnesses, work-related preventative medical services, medical surveillance programs for lab staff and wellness program coordination.The medical center location and hours will not change.

    New Cell Tower a Boon for Grass Fire Alert
Yesterday morning a quarter acre of grass on the hill above the Alpine Gate burned due to an arc flash on a power transmission line. SLAC's emergency services responded quickly and were able to control the situation in minutes, due in part to the improved cell phone signal provided by the recently erected AT&T tower.

    New Cooling Tower 101 Now Cooling Central Campus
Yes, it is finished. In the course of about 15 weeks, the old Cooling Tower 101 was demolished, the basin was cleaned, new base anchors installed, piers seismically upgraded, and a new cooling tower was constructed, commissioned and put on line.
