Call for Proposals: Laboratory Directed Research and Development 2011

The Director invites all mission-oriented SLAC Directorates to submit proposals for the fiscal year 2011 Laboratory Directed Research and Development program.

As a mechanism for directing SLAC's forefront scientific research capabilities toward vital and emerging scientific challenges, the LDRD program provides the resources for SLAC scientists to make rapid and significant contributions solving critical national science and technology problems. The LDRD program contributes to the laboratory's scientific staff capability and vitality by supporting initial and exploratory work in forefront areas of science and technology that enrich Laboratory R&D core competencies and seed new areas of discovery.

For fiscal year 2011, SLAC's LDRD program includes a second type of proposal category that will provide the opportunity for investment in "high risk/high payoff" areas. The two categories of proposals for the upcoming call are:

  • proposals intended to initiate and/or develop major new strategic directions
  • "discovery" proposals with higher scientific risk and potential

For program details and proposal submission guidelines, see the complete LDRD 2011 Call for Proposals.

Reminder:
Watch Out for Construction Sites

SLAC has a lot of ongoing construction work and heavy equipment on site, with the most visible work at Cooling Tower 101, the LCLS Office Building and the photon science offices and labs in Building 40. Entrance to a construction site requires full PPE (personnel protective equipment) and release (approval) from the area manager. Please take care to note safety regulations and signs, and do not enter these areas unless you have a direct business need and release from the area manager.

Sherin to Present on Haiti Disaster Relief on Campus Next Wednesday

Many have expressed disappointment that they missed Deputy Director for Environment, Safety and Health Brian Sherin's presentation on Haiti last week. Now there's a second opportunity. Sherin will present his striking photos and stories of his experiences with the U.S. emergency response in Haiti at Stanford's Clark Center auditorium next Wednesday, February 17 at noon.
