One of the recent streamlining efforts at SLAC has resulted in synchronizing the names of employees and contractors across the two main databases that provide this information across the lab. There are three types of names used at SLAC:

• The formal name is the full legal name that is used in official situations such as tax forms, passports, etc.
• The preferred name is used in the online SLAC directory and in various business systems such as procurement and property control.
• Former name is also available as needed for employees who have changed their names.

The preferred name is most visible since it is used in the online directory. In the past, if no preferred name existed, the formal name was used. Now, the default preferred name will be constructed as: Lastname, Firstname MiddleInitial.
