This is a major revision of an existing chapter.

The SLAC Environment, Safety, and Health Manual (SLAC-I-720-0A29Z-001-R023) is being revised.

Chapter 41, "Hoisting and Rigging", has been revised in its entirety and now aligns SLAC policy with OSHA regulations, DOE-STD-1090-2004 and related ASME / ANSI standards. This revision also reflects SLAC's commitment to integrated safety and environmental management.

The revised chapter

  • Includes a review of conformance form that lays out requirements for bringing new and existing equipment into conformance
  • Provides lift planning and lift plan documentation guidance
  • Establishes the maintenance program for cranes, hoists, and miscellaneous lifting devices
  • Specifies subcontractor responsibilities
  • Defines forklift restrictions in hoisting and rigging activities
  • Clarifies training requirements

The Hoisting and Rigging Citizen Committee and program manager will be conducting an outreach effort to help affected groups use the new forms and tools. Details will be announced in the coming weeks.

This revision supersedes Chapter 41, "Hoisting and Rigging", published in March 1997; the Advisories and Interpretations web page; and the Hoisting and Rigging Safety Interim Procedure.

For questions on the content of this chapter, contact the program manager, Jim Healy (ext. 4989, jchealy@SLAC.Stanford.edu).
