Date: 12 March 2007

This is a major revision of an existing chapter.

The SLAC Environment, Safety, and Health Manual (SLAC-I-720-0A29Z-001-R023) is being revised.

This Chapter 29, ?Respiratory Protection?, has been revised in its entirety. It has been amended to include more detailed information on the program?s requirements and how they are implemented at SLAC. Main additions are

  • Scope
  • Definitions
  • Recordkeeping
  • Clarification on voluntary dust mask use, including eliminating dust mask approval process (previously included a dust mask user form and medical evaluation)
  • Fit testing equipment requirements
  • Designation of respirator use required operations and areas
  • Formalization of the Respiratory Protection Practical Fit Test by giving it a course number (241PR)

Staff members who have either worn or considered wearing respiratory protection in the past and their supervisors must read this chapter to determine the extent to which these new requirements affect their use of this kind of personal protective equipment.

Please note that the decision to require respiratory protection as defined in this chapter is reserved for the respiratory protection program manager, based on the results of surveys.

This document replaces the existing Chapter 29, ?Respirator Program?, published in October 1995.

For questions on the content of this chapter, contact the program manager, John Shepardson (ext. 4105, johnds@SLAC.Stanford.edu).
