Diwali is perhaps the most well-known of the Indian festivals: Diwali is Christmas for the Hindus. It is celebrated throughout India, as well as in Indian communities throughout the bay area. It is colloquially known as the "festival of lights", for the common practices are to light small oil lamps (called Diyas) and place them around the home. Diyas are believed to be ambassadors of good times to come. In urban areas, especially, candles are substituted for diyas; the celebration of the festival is invariably accompanied by the exchange of sweets and the explosion of fireworks. Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth is invoked to bring prosperity. (Hope she brings more funds for our lab for the next fiscal year!). The `Laxmi Pooja' is one of the most significant rituals of the Diwali celebrations and all vernacular accounting starts on this day. New ledgers are bought and a new accounting year is started.
