Computing Support During the Shutdown

Even though the lab will be closed from December 22, 2007 through January 2, 2008, all computing systems supported by Scientific Computing and Computing Services (SCCS) will be left running during this period.

If a problem should arise, you may leave critical and non-critical messages on the SCCS Help Desk line at 650-926-HELP or x4357. Problems flagged as critical will cause an immediate page to the person who is formally on-call; he or she will decide on the criticality of the problem. Non-critical messages will be retrieved and acted upon when we return from holiday on January 3rd.

There will be a small skeleton crew voluntarily monitoring critical systems remotely during this period. Please consider the staffing level during the holiday and raise your threshold for criticality accordingly. Please understand that the few people available may lack necessary expert knowledge about any of our systems. If such systems break, they may stay down until we return on January 3.

Please enjoy your break to the fullest extent possible and direct some of that holiday cheer to the team of people across the entire SLAC complex that is working of their own volition to keep SLAC running.
