As SLAC science races toward the future, the lab's systems and infrastructure have to keep up. Most of the lab's original facilities are still in place and, as expected with any property over time, some areas are in need of a facelift. Last summer, the SLAC Facilities Division was looking for the right someone to help move the lab forward and ensure that systems old and new would run smoothly as long as there was science to be done. That someone is Norm Bobczynski.

Bobczynski came to SLAC in late August 2010 as the manager of Operations and Maintenance, one of four major initiatives within the Facilities Division. His primary responsibility is to devise a strategy to improve the long-term maintenance and reliability of SLAC's infrastructure.

"Folks here have done an outstanding job in being able to fix infrastructure problems, as they arise, in a very rapid manner," Bobczynski said. But he notes that as the lab ages, normal life-cycle issues associated with deteriorating facilities are likely to happen more often. "As the number of these issues increases, our ability to simply respond to emergencies will be pushed to the limit," he said.  Read more...

RSB Project to Host Coffee, Donuts, Q&A January  26

Construction on Building 28 and the new Research Support Building (Building 52) are scheduled to begin soon. The work will affect traffic and access to several areas at the lab. With this in mind, the Research Support Building and Infrastructure Modernization Project team leaders invite you to our third "coffee hour" next Wednesday, January 26 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. in the Linear Cafe. In addition to coffee and donuts, we will dole out information about the project, and talk one-on-one with you. If you have questions about the construction and renovation that will soon begin with Buildings 28 and 52, site logistics or road access around the construction area, this is a great time to get them answered.

We look forward to seeing you in the Cafeteria on January 26!

Reminder: SLAC Blood Drive Today

Give a Pint, Get a Pint

(Logo)SLAC will host a blood drive in the Panofsky Auditorium Lobby from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. This drive is open to all members of the SLAC community and the general public. In addition to the satisfaction of helping patients and local hospitals, each donor will receive a coupon for a free pint of Baskin-Robins ice cream.

To donate blood, you must:

  • Be at least 17 years of age.
  • Weigh at least 110 pounds.
  • Be free of cold and flu symptoms (allergies okay; as are most medications).
  • Eat before donating & drink plenty of fluids.
  • Bring photo identification.

Appointments will be given priority, but walk-ins are always welcome! To schedule an appointment online, log onto the Stanford Blood Center site and click "Schedule an Appointment" at the top right side of the page. Search for sponsor code "0136," click on the date of the drive, then follow the prompts to schedule an appointment.
