SLAC Subcouncils: Solving Problems

(Image)

Bob Hettel, Accelerator Division Head at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource, has a whole list of problems. They're things that people from around the lab have told him about, points where safety policy might benefit from input or gaps where new policy might be useful.

Hettel, who chairs the Environment, Safety and Health Subcouncil, uses the list to help direct the group. Working with Chief Safety Officer Craig Ferguson and his staff, items on the list are prioritized and the subcouncil starts talking about how the list can be shortened.

It's what the subcouncils are designed to do: Provide lab employees with the chance to give input on changes proposed by the Operations teams in charge of health, safety, facilities, human resources, business, computing services, information technology and lab management. For Hettel, the subcouncils provide an opportunity to create a meeting ground between policy requirements and the practical realities of day-to-day work.

"We need checks and balances, a channel of communication," Hettel said. "This is our chance to speak up and share our wisdom before policies are cast in concrete."  Read more...

Bob Siemann Symposium and Workshop

(Image - Bob Siemann Symposium)

The many contributions of pioneering accelerator physicist Robert H. Siemann will be honored at a symposium on July 7th in the Kavli Auditorium, and in the subsequent mini-workshop on Novel Concepts for Linear Accelerators and Colliders, July 8th10th.

Everyone is warmly invited to take part. The program, workshop charge and organization, and registration are available online. Please join us for this event, and for the dedication of a tree planted on the SLAC Green in Bob's honor.

Please also share your memories and wishes with the Siemann family through a special online Guestbook created for the occasion.

Public Lecture Tonight: Cosmic Accelerators

Tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Panofsky Auditorium, SLAC astrophysicist Stefan Funk will present "Cosmic Accelerators: Engines of the Extreme Universe."

The universe is home to numerous exotic and beautiful phenomena, some of which can generate almost inconceivable amounts of energy. Although the night sky appears calm, it is populated by colossal explosions, jets from supermassive black holes, rapidly rotating neutron stars and shock waves of gas moving at supersonic speeds. These accelerators in the sky boost particles to energies far beyond those we can produce on earth. New types of telescopes, including the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, are now discovering a host of new and more powerful accelerators. Please come and see how these observations are revising our picture of the most energetic phenomena in the universe. The talk is free and open to all.

SLAC Safety Notes

Caution at Sand Hill and Saga

No matter how often you've traveled through SLAC's front gate, please take extra care—whether coming or going. Your 500th left turn out the gate could feel almost automatic, but treating an immediate left as a sure thing poses a danger to pedestrians and motorists crossing Sand Hill Road on the other side. Cars have even been spotted zipping around vehicles that stopped to wait for pedestrians—putting the unseen folks on foot in terrible jeopardy.

Sand Hill Road and Saga Lane.

Whether entering or exiting SLAC, keep an eye out for the many bicyclists who travel Sand Hill Road. There is a bike lane on the right side in both directions.

Please leave those bike lanes clear for cyclists, and never drive around a car that has stopped at an intersection or crosswalk. Your patience and attention can prevent tragedy.
