SLAC Business Services Division to Develop Finance Center of Excellence

As part of ongoing improvements to support the lab's scientific mission, SLAC's Business Services Division will be reorganized to form a new "CFO organization." The new organization will create a center of excellence for finance at SLAC, and support the Operations Directorate's goal of being the partner of choice for laboratory support services.

"SLAC's management and Board of Overseers both agree on the need for a focused and integrated financial group to help streamline operations and achieve outstanding performance," said SLAC Director Persis Drell.

SLAC management is actively seeking a new Chief Finance Officer to lead this organization. "We are preparing the structure to support the new CFO while the search for him or her is underway," said Operations Director Alexander Merola, who will act as interim director during the transition.

SLAC's current CFO, Mimi Chang, plans to retire soon. "This is a tough search" Merola said. "Mimi Chang left some big shoes to fill in her many years of outstanding service, and the new finance center will have very high standards to uphold, to be the partner of choice for the lab's finance needs. This Partner of Choice model will be the vehicle that allows us to move to a centrally-managed, field-deployed service delivery model."

As part of an all-hands briefing to BSD staff yesterday, Merola noted that "We in Operations are committed to making SLAC the most scientifically competitive laboratory in the DOE Office of Science complex. And we will succeed."

At the outcome of the meeting, the committee reported that it "now feels secure in enthusiastically encouraging the SuperB design team to proceed to the TDR phase, with confidence that the design parameters are achievable."  Read more on Interactions...
