President Obama to Address the DOE Today

President Barack Obama will deliver an address to Department of Energy employees at 9:00 a.m. PST today. Everyone at SLAC is invited to Panofsky Auditorium to hear the audio broadcast of his remarks. Due to fire regulations, people may not stand or sit on the stairs in the Auditorium during the broadcast, so seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Work Planning and Control Update

As announced last fall, SLAC is rolling out an improved Work Planning and Control process, the culmination of more than two years of work by a committee chaired by Karen Fant and more recently by Leslie Stepanek, SLAC's WP&C manager. Each of the associate laboratory directors has been asked to identify WP&C liaisons who will train the personnel in their respective directorates. This training will begin in February and is scheduled to be completed by the end of March. PAMELA Signal Probably Not Dark Matter

Last August, a stir went through the physics community when a presenter at the International Conference on High Energy Physics in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, showed some data from the PAMELA satellite. The data indicated a surprising excess of positrons and anti-protons in the cosmic rays raining down on Earth. Various commentators and scientists speculated that this could be a signal of dark matter particles annihilating.

Reminder: Multimedia Service Requests

Please submit all multimedia service requests using the online Multimedia Services Event Request Form. For meetings and events, requests are needed at least one week in advance to to schedule technicians and equipment.

Multimedia Services provides an entire suite of video production functions for the Panofsky Auditorium conference facility as well as meetings and events site-wide. Services include:

• audio production/microphones
• video production
• video taping
• large-screen projection of video and computer presentations
• maintenance of conference and meeting room equipment at SLAC
• A/V equipment consultations
• tape-to-DVD transfers
• DVD duplication

Workshop for Hiring Managers

Human Resources is offering a workshop to assist hiring managers in finding great employees and avoiding costly hiring mistakes. This 3-hour workshop will provide practical tips on defining job specifications, developing interview questions, conducting effective interviews and selecting the right candidate for your job. "Guide to Selecting Great Candidates" will be held on Thursday, February 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Building 48. Please e-mail Charlotte Carlson to register.
