Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman will address the staff of Fermilab this morning in Batavia, Illinois.

Secretary Bodman will highlight aspects of the American Competitiveness Initiative and discuss how work at Fermilab helps to further this initiative. He is also expected to talk about the value of high-energy physics to U.S. competitiveness in science.

The talk will be broadcast live via streaming video beginning at 9:00 a.m. PST.

Colloquium Monday

SLAC Colloquium:
The Jasons

Freelance science writer and Johns Hopkins Professor Ann Finkbeiner will present Monday's colloquium, "The Jasons." Finkbeiner is the author of a profile of Jason, a group of academic scientists that advises the U.S. government. The book starts where the Manhattan Project ends—with physicists trying to decide, having let the genie out of the bottle, how to get it back in again. One result of their attempts is Jason.

Jason meets for six weeks every summer to answer questions for the government—usually for the defense department or the intelligence community—about national security issues. The group specializes in studies for the Department of Energy on the technical backing for treaties to ban the bomb. Jason is unique, not only in this country, but in the world. In her talk, Finkbeiner will discuss the group's attempt to hold onto its scientific soul, remain independent, and still stay in business.

The colloquium will take place at 4:15 p.m. on Monday, April 10 in Panofsky Auditorium. All are invited to attend.
